Facial tool phenomenon: Does gua sha really work?

You’ve seen them in the glossy vanity shots of every skincare Instagram. From beauty tutorials to medicine cabinets to skincare brands, gua sha tools and techniques are seemingly taking over the internet. We’ve all seen these beautiful flat stones and rollers, in jade, quartz, and amethyst. But is there popularity only due to their pleasing aesthetics, or does gua sha really work?

One of our favorite facialists on Instagram, Danna Omari owner of Noy Skincare in Manhattan, is our go-to believer and teacher of gua sha. She shares techniques and demonstrates proper use of skincare tools in her daily content and live webinars. “A gua sha [facial] works on the face’s connective tissue, the facial fascia, which helps lift and release the facial muscles,” she explains. “The routine, when done right, increases circulation, plumps the skin and removes blockages.”

Omari always uses her tools with her beloved Seabuckthorn oil and explains it promotes a healthy glow to the skin. And we’re inclined to believe her. At 33, Omari has not a wrinkle on the face and has the most lively, healthy-looking skin. Could this really be from stone facial massages?

Another skincare expert and esthetician, Jade Marie, recently shared her weekly beauty and self-care ritual, her Crystal Gua Sha Facelift. She shares her techniques through a video and writes the facial helps promote “✨sculpted ✨tight ✨toned skin.” Jade uses a variety of pink stones on her clients as well, benefits being juicy, younger-looking skin.

From the evidence, we’re becoming believers of the gua sha techniques. When done properly (and we advise you watch tutorials or attend a webinar training by Omari), the stone massage can move excess fluid, increase blood flow, create a healthy glow, and reduce fine lines over time.
